Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
